Deleting a Budget

This article solely relates to the new version of MoneyWell (that is available from the App Store and released in March 2023) and is entirely not relevant to any of the previous versions, MoneyWell 3, MoneyWell 2 or the MoneyWell 1.

As MoneyWell has now moved away from the old style MoneyWell Document format, and onto the new Budget format. The way that your data is handled by MoneyWell has changed. For more information on where your MoneyWell is stored, see our article, Where is my MoneyWell data being stored.

As we have introduced our new sync system, your Budget can be available from a number of devices. This article will explain how to remove a Budget from each one individually, and how to completely remove a Budget entirely.

  1. Local Only (sync has not been enabled)
  2. Sync Enabled Budget
  3. Express

Local Only (sync has not been enabled)

To delete a Budget that has not had sync enabled:

  1. Open MoneyWell on your Mac
  2. Close any Budgets that may have opened
  3. Go to MoneyWell -> Settings -> Sync (1)
  4. Here you will see three tabs "Local only" (2), "Syncing", "Remote (available to download)". We are only interested in the "Local only" (2) tab, so click that
  5. You will now see a list of your Budgets that are only on this Mac. Each one should have a "Delete" (3) button to the right of it, if you are seeing a checkmark (4), this indicates that the Budget is still open, if the Budget you wish to delete has a checkmark beside it, you will need to close this window, close the Budget and then come back to this window as stated in steps 3 and 4

Sync Enabled Budget

To delete a Budget that has had sync enabled. This process involves three separate steps. Detaching, deleting from cloud, deleting the local copy.

Detaching severs the connection between the local copy of your Budget stored on your Mac, and the copy of your Budget that is stored in the cloud, for use by other devices.

Deleting from cloud removes the copy of your Budget from the cloud.

Delete the local copy completely removes the local copy of your Budget from your Mac.

All three steps need to be completed in order for the Budget to be completely deleted.

  1. Open MoneyWell on your Mac
  2. Close any Budgets that may have opened
  3. Go to MoneyWell -> Settings -> Sync (1)
  4. The first step is to detach your Budget, this is done via the "Syncing" (2) tab
  5. Once on the Syncing tab, you should see a list of Budgets are set up for sync, each with a "Detach budget" button (3) aside them, if you are seeing a checkmark (4), this indicates that the Budget is still open, if the Budget you wish to delete has a checkmark beside it, you will need to close this window, close the Budget and then come back to this window as stated in steps 3 and 4

At this point you can now continue to use and sync this Budget from other devices to the cloud, only the Mac that you are performing these steps on will be affected.

To further remove this Budget from only this Mac and to continue to use and sync the Budget on other devices, please skip the next few steps and continue following the steps as laid out in the Local Only (sync has not been enabled) section of this article.

The next few steps are to completely delete a no longer needed or unwanted Budget. It is not possible to undo these changes.

  1. Once the Budget has detached, go to the "Remote (available to download)" (1) tab
  2. Once on the Remote (available to download) tab, you should see a list of Budgets that are in the cloud and are available to download to this device, each with a "Delete from cloud" button (2) aside them, if you are seeing a checkmark, this indicates that the Budget is still open, if the Budget you wish to delete has a checkmark beside it, you will need to close this window, close the Budget and then come back to this window as stated in steps 3 and 9
